figure and ground at once; it is the sense of
ground prior to figures emerging or becoming
detached. This sensibility relies on a very delicate
equilibrium; the moment one or another figure
begins to exaggerate itself or to dominate the
situation, the balance is destroyed and the other
elements begin to recede and to form a ground
for it. “All other figures at once means ‘no figures’
= just outlines and interfaces, just structure.” All
things are both figure and ground for each other.
The left hemisphere relates to a logical, linear
structure which complements the right
hemisphere non-linear, free-flowing form. Without
